How to use

  1. A password is generated as soon as the page loads.
  2. Set the length with the slider or the number box, from 8 to 128 characters.
  3. Tick the types of characters to include. Tick Exclude look-alikes if you will read or type the password by hand.
  4. Every change makes a new password. Press Generate another for a fresh one with the same settings.

Questions

Is the password sent or saved anywhere?

No. It is generated on your device with the browser's crypto.getRandomValues(), the same secure source used for encryption keys. It is never sent, logged or stored, and it is gone when you leave the page.

What does "bits of entropy" mean?

It measures how many passwords these settings could produce. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker would need. The figure is exact for this generator: it counts only passwords that contain every type you ticked.

How long should my password be?

For most accounts, 16 or more characters with all types gives well over 90 bits, which is far beyond what can be guessed. If you must type it often, a longer password with fewer symbols can be just as strong.

Is every chosen character type always included?

Yes. Passwords that miss a type you ticked are thrown away and redrawn, so every password contains at least one of each, and every allowed password is equally likely.

What are look-alikes?

Characters that are easy to confuse: 0 O o 1 l I. Leaving them out helps when you have to read a password aloud or type it from paper. It lowers the strength slightly.
