Questions

Can it open a PDF if I don't know the password?

No. You need the password to unlock the file. This tool removes a password you already know; it does not guess, try lists of passwords or crack encryption.

Why are bank statements and e-Aadhaar PDFs locked?

Banks, card companies and UIDAI protect these documents because they hold personal details. The password is usually explained in the email or on the download page, and is often part of your name and your date of birth or account number. For e-Aadhaar, it is the first four letters of your name in capitals plus your year of birth.

Do my file and password leave my device?

No. The PDF is unlocked in your browser with qpdf running as WebAssembly in a background worker. The password is kept only in memory while you use the page, and the box is cleared after unlocking.

Is the unlocked PDF still searchable?

Yes. The file is decrypted, not printed or turned into pictures, so text stays selectable and searchable, and links, bookmarks and page sizes are kept.

What are restrictions?

Some PDFs open without a password but block printing, copying or editing. These are set with a separate owner password. When a file opens freely, Unlock PDF removes the restrictions too.

Are there limits?

Up to 100 MB per PDF.
